Why was bobbed hair considered so shocking in the early 1920s?

It was a rebellion of sorts from the traditional, very feminine, longer hair of the time.....although it was often worn up or pulled back.

Because long hair was considered to be a woman's crowning glory, which should never be cut. This is expressed in the Old Testament of the Bible.
